Music Genre
I have chosen to base my music magazine around pop artists and groups within the top musicians today. The reason I chose this music genre is because of the target audience I am aiming my magazine at. They listen to modern day music such as:
And would read exclusive interviews and stories based on their careers, life style and how they meet fame.
However, not only looking at the greatest hits, artists, and groups that perform today but I would also like to involve artists, groups from the past such as:
Through this I am not only aiming at the younger generation of my target audience but the older group as well.

For my magazine is directly at the
bottom of the cover with the issue number, barcode and the price. The slogan
for my magazine reads: ‘to learn more about Wyke read on’. Straight away this
grabs the attention of the students making them curious of what the college has
to offer for itself and on the exclusive main stories. ‘In The Know’ was what I
chose to call my college magazine. I wanted the masthead to be simple but
memorable.
The colour scheme is Green and
Black, which works alongside the college’s logo. The green is a bold and bright
colour whereas the black is subtle making the colours contrast and standout.
The Titles, masthead, slogans, subheadings.. etc all have the same house style and font, making it easier for the reader to understand and making the magazine look more grown up and professional.
The Titles, masthead, slogans, subheadings.. etc all have the same house style and font, making it easier for the reader to understand and making the magazine look more grown up and professional.
The layout of the magazine is
simple. The main image shows a student at the college. Here I have made
contrasts between 2 colours, first being black and white: the background of the
college. Secondly, colour, the college student is standing out from the rest of
the scenery. Through this I have tried to bring across the atmosphere of the
student and the college.
I have tried to style the thumbnail
images in the same way as the background image, through having some as black
and white, and some in colour.
Institutions
The students at the college and
those who would be interested in joining within the next year, I would
distribute my college magazine to this audience. The students would probably
like to keep up with the news, the latest updates and main stories about the
college keeping them in the know and discovering what’s new
On the other hand, the students that
will be finishing there secondary school after there exams would also
be interested. They will want to
know what Wyke has to offer them that other colleges don’t, and whether it’s
the right college for them. It will have all the information they would want
and more.
Ideology
The message that I am trying to put
through from my magazine is that Wyke is a completely different college to
other colleges.
It has a new and fresh feel, and
makes you feel like you fit in. The college itself, has a wide range of
subjects and support to offer to everyone.
The idea is to show what Wyke has to
offer, and what it’s really like, showing the positives, highlights, and the
College.
Audience
The Target audience I chose to aim
my magazine at are 15-25 year old (mainly students at colleges and secondary
schools), and the Socio-economic group D&E.
I tried to make the images for my
magazine speak for themselves about my college to my target audience.
A student’s life should be fun and
enjoyable, and going to a college should be part of that fun and enjoyment.
However trying to show this to a target audience which wants to either start
fresh at a new college from an old one, and for those that are finishing school
and starting there new life at college isn’t easy.
So I tried to make the layout of the
magazine, the house style etc, more in line with this target group.
Representation
The idea of my college magazine was
to represent what Wyke is really about. It’s a fun, but hard working,
successful college that opens there arms out to everyone
The images I have presented don’t
show a stereotypical student working hard at a college. Instead I chose ones
which show the highlights and joys of the college within the students. I
haven’t shown the negative sides to teenagers to which have names placed upon
them, but the fact that everyone is equal in their own unique and quirky way.
I have also tried to show that the
college takes pride and interest in the students and work they present, by
making them the main stories and interests for the magazine.
Music magazine brief
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).

My chosen College for my Preliminary task
I have chosen Wyke sixth form college as the college to be featured in my magazine. I feel like this is a good idea as Wyke is a very popular and well known college that brings a lot of new students every year. I also attend Wyke college which is an advantage of getting information and images to go on my front cover.
LIIAR anaylsis of Grimsby College
The Grimsby College ’s layout stands out and looks more like a college magazine.
They have chosen bright and bold colours for the back ground. The colours could have been a bit more young and enthusiastic rather than a business magazine look. The students are not going to be interested in a magazine that has no fun or life to it. They have used the same font for each bit of information, and made the text easy to read.
The masthead is the only text that really stands out on the cover. Although the website details are in a big font and are accessible to read, I feel that the main image is less creative and boring for a college magazine. The image should be bold, appealing and also trying to send out a message about the college to the young students that want to join the next year.
Although the contents page has lots of information and adverts it has been divided accordingly making it easier for the reader to find the information they need.
The information sections are all unique in their own way. The top left hand one ‘gx’ shows people ‘walking’ to what they want to do within the college. The Image is young and vibrant and striking. The logo is bold and noticeable which draws the eye of the reader towards the advert.
At the bottom left hand they have used a contrast by using a black and white image with a mixture of enthusiastic looking young students. They have chosen a distinctive font colour which brings out the information about that advert.
The contents section has a lot of bright, colourful and original images on this page making it look like a young adults college magazine. The font and the colouring for the headings are all distinctive making each section stand out.
The language they have chosen for the subheadings, giving a small bit of detail about the contents within the page is aimed at the age group 16-19. This makes it more up beat and interesting.

LIIAR anaylsis of East Riding College
The contents page doesn’t really stand out as a student’s magazine.
They have kept the colour scheme as black and white and the text the same font. Putting a green box behind the information you are accessing makes it more difficult to read, giving it a primary school feel rather than a college magazine.
They have placed black borders around the images; I feel that this doesn’t add anymore interest to the magazine; however the black borders are all different sizes this makes it look less professional in regard to other college magazines I have seen. There is also no information underneath the images; the reader is unable to understand the purpose of the images.
The main thing that stands out on the contents page is the masthead and the bright green text box. I feel that they could have made the images stand out more and make them the main attraction rather than a green box.
LIIAR anaylsis of East Riding College
I feel that The East Riding College magazine could have been presented a lot better than it has been.
If I had presented this magazine then I wouldn’t have used the colours black and white. I feel that it doesn’t really show off how good the East Riding College can be.
It doesn’t stand out, isn’t striking and I can’t see teenagers of our age being enthusiastic about the college.
It doesn’t stand out, isn’t striking and I can’t see teenagers of our age being enthusiastic about the college.
The Masthead stands out from all the other texts. It’s nice to see that they have kept the rest of the font and colours for the texts the same. It makes it look more of a professional magazine. However I feel that the College Logo could have been different. It doesn’t really stand out to the students.
The colour scheme isn’t particularly interesting, the contrast between the black and white makes it look dull and boring. I feel with this, it brings across a message that the East Riding College is dull and boring. If I did the magazine then I would have set the colour scheme alongside the colours of the Colleges logo and made the font more of a students way of life, but still easy to read.
The Image is of a school trip to Berlin but we can’t see the faces of the students. The image does look very picturesque and shows exactly what the students could see at the time. However the type of picture they have chosen doesn’t show whether the students are having a good time and learning, and where they are staying.

College magazine Brief
Preliminary exercise
Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/ college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close- up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the context page to demonstrate thier grasp of DTP.
